🕌 Mizdakhan Necropolis

The first stop is Mizdakhan Necropolis, one of the oldest and most mysterious sites in the region. About 1 hour is usually enough to explore.

The complex was first established in the Early Antique period and later expanded during the medieval era (up to the 14th century).

It was mentioned by Persian historians and Arab geographers as early as the 10th century.

The site spreads across three small hills, containing a citadel, outer town, and burial grounds.

The oldest settlement dates back to the 4th century BCE, making it one of the most ancient historical places in Karakalpakstan.

⚓️ Muynak Ship Cemetery & Aral Sea History Museum

From Mizdakhan, it’s a 170 km drive (around 2 hours) to reach Muynak, once a lively fishing town on the shores of the great Aral Sea.

Today, you will visit two unique sights located next to each other:

The Aral Sea History Museum, a small but fascinating museum where you can learn how the sea—once the 4th largest inland saltwater lake in the world—gradually shrank because of irrigation projects designed to support cotton farming.

The Muynak Ship Cemetery, a haunting reminder of the past, where abandoned fishing boats now sit on the dry seabed, turned into a desert of sand.

Decades ago, Muynak thrived as a port town, but as the water receded, businesses closed, fishing ended, and many residents were forced to leave. Here, you will witness one of the world’s greatest ecological tragedies firsthand.
