The first stop is just a short 20-minute drive away: Chodra Hauli, the summer residence of Muhammad Rakhim Khan, built in 1871. This four-story palace rises 30 meters high and was designed to resemble a minaret. Despite its great height, it stands on a small base of 16 by 8 meters. The basement once held storerooms and warehouses, while the first and second floors contain wide and airy rooms.
We will then continue to the Yangiariq Poetry Center, where you can see how local craftsmen create traditional ceramics. Here, you’ll also find a selection of handmade pottery, perfect as souvenirs or for decorating your home.
The highlight of the excursion is Kalajik Lake, also called the Salty Lake. It lies in the desert near the ruins of Kalajik Kala, a fortress dating back to the 4th century BC. According to legend, its origins are linked to King Solomon, who is said to have built it in honor of his father, David. The water here is similar to that of the Dead Sea and is famous for its healing properties. The surrounding sand dunes are also known for their health benefits. In the summer months, the lake attracts many visitors who come to enjoy swimming, sand baths, camel rides, and horseback riding.
After spending time at the lake and fortress, we will take a scenic 90-minute drive back to Khiva. The trip concludes with a drop-off at either your hotel or the train station, all included in the same affordable price.
