The Aral Sea was once one of the world’s largest inland saltwater seas. Today, it has been reduced to only a fraction of its former size due to extensive irrigation that depleted the flow of the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers.
Over thousands of years, however, the sea has also gone through many natural changes. The riverbeds constantly shifted, and satellite photographs reveal traces of ancient channels flowing into different parts of the sea. Sometimes they even bypassed the Aral Sea completely, turning south and west to reach the Caspian Sea. Today, these dry riverbeds cut across the desert, but archaeological research has uncovered traces of settlements along their banks—proof that water flowed there relatively recently in historical terms (V.N. Yagodin & A.V.G. Betts, Ancient Khorezm, UNESCO 2006).
