The Aral Sea was once one of the world’s largest inland saltwater seas. Today, it is only a shadow of its former size due to extensive irrigation projects that depleted the flow of the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers — the sea’s lifelines.

But long before modern changes, the Aral Sea had already gone through many natural transformations over thousands of years. The riverbeds of the Amudarya and Syrdarya constantly shifted, and satellite images reveal traces of ancient courses that sometimes bypassed the Aral Sea entirely, flowing instead toward the Caspian Sea. Dry riverbeds crossing today’s deserts still carry echoes of the past. Archaeological research has even uncovered settlements along these channels, proof that water flowed there relatively recently in historical terms (V.N. Yagodin & A.V.G. Betts, Ancient Khorezm, UNESCO 2006).
